Alicia Ormsby, of Hanging Heaton and a member of Heckmondwike ladies team, became the first Yorkshire girl to win the prestigious BRITISH CROWN GREEN ladies junior title.

The Yorkshire junior team member won the title at Owleywood Bowling Club, Cheshire on Sunday.

After winning all four games in the opening round-robin sequence – including beating the previous winner – Ormsby went on to win the semi-final 15-3 and the final 15-11.

Hannah Turner, of Guiseley, won her section but lost in the semi-finals.

Chelsea Gilbert (Broad Oak, Huddersfield) and Chloe Lay (Earlesheaton) also represented Yorkshire, both winning two games out of four.

Robbie Ellis (Royd House) was the winner of the DAVID IKE ROBINSON MEMORIAL HANDICAP.

Ellis retained the title he won last year by beating Thomas Bailey (Wibsey) 21-17 in the final. Ellis bowled well throughout, coming through a tough quarter-final against Bailey Rice (Drighlington) 21-17, and last year’s runner-up Josh Mordue (Brighouse Sports) 21-10 in the semi-final. Richard Stockdale was the winner of the BEN RAMSDEN MERIT, after beating Paul Haigh (Cross Roads) 21-12 in the final (full report to follow next week).

Carl Armitage (Warrington) was the winner of the 2010 SPEN MASTERS.

Armitage, who bowled consistently well throughout, beat Richard Jackson 21-13 in the final. Armitage opened up with a 21-15 win over Richard Bentley (Cleckheaton Sports), before destroying Chris Mordue (Brighouse Sports) 21-7 in the quarters. A narrow 21-20 semi-final win over Hugh Hornby saw him through to the final.

Liam Griffin (Pudsey) and Tony Green (Crossgates) were the latest qualifiers in the GRAHAM WOOD MEMORIAL competition at Pudsey Littlemoor. Griffin qualified with wins over Paul Rooks (Eccleshill) 21-9, Mark Hughes (Crossgates) 21-18 and David Scott (Lower Hopton) 21-13, while Green rolled back the years to qualify with wins over Dave Smith (Garforth Rec) 21-19, Dan Beardsworth (Pudsey) 21-17 and Andy Whittaker (Sheffield) 21-19.

The final qualifying round takes place on Friday, with many local bowlers in action.

Mark Ferris (Stoke) and Nigel Cranston (Wakefield) were the latest qualifiers in the £5,000 BRIGHOUSE CLASSIC.

Ferris beat Josh Gamble (Drighlington) 21-15 and Cranston won an epic game 21-20 against James Davison (Thongsbridge). The final qualifying round takes place on Friday at 6.30, with Cleckheaton’s David Walker in action against Leeds’ Chris Firth.

The 12th PUDSEY JUNIOR CLASSIC takes place on Sunday, September 26. Entries are taken up until 9.30am on the day, with the draw at the green for a 10am start.

It is open to boys and girls aged 16 and under on the day, and competition is handicapped by age. Entry fee is £2, with the winner receiving £80. Anyone interested should contact Stuart Hanson on 07979-568591.

The final of the PAIRS KNOCKOUT takes place on Sunday at Spen Victoria, between Shipley Club A and Clayton, with a 2pm start. Clayton last won the title in 1993, while Shipley are looking to win it for the first time.

Entries (limited to 64) are being taken for the HOVE EDGE LADIES DAY open bowling merit on Saturday, October 2 (10am).

Prize money will be £150 (entries permitting) and the entry fee is £3.
