The veterans table tennis tournament circuit began with the North-East Masters in Sunderland and for Helen Shields it was a case of so near yet so far.

In the ladies 50 singles event, Shields reached the final when she met Teresa Donovan from Ireland.

She should have triumphed in straight games but let the second game slip away after leading 7-3 and, despite leading by two games to one, was beaten 11-9 in the final game.

In the doubles it was deja vu as Shields, partnered by Shirley Gelder of Durham, was beaten by Donovan and Jenny Harrison.

Meanwhile, the Bradford Summer League is now over and for Mann Younis another personal double has been achieved.

Following his exploits for Laisterdyke A in the Winter League, where he won the averages and helped Laisterdyke A to the Division Two title, Younis won the Summer League Division One title with Yeadon C and also took the averages award.

Unity C won the Division Two title, with Steve Worsman winning the averages, while in the Bower Cup final, holders Pudsey TTC overcame Unity A.
