Right on Cue

Great Horton Conservative Club marked 100 years since first winning Bradford billiards’ showpiece MOORHOUSE SHIELD tournament by beating Chapel Green Liberal Club in this year’s final.

The historic feat at Queensbury Conservative Club was not lost on captain Dave Western, who was quite rightly proud of Great Horton’s achievement.

Conceding 140 points on the handicap, Paul Davies of Chapel Green was expected to outscore opponent Terry Crawshaw.

But the Great Horton man was in outstanding form, making a break of 33, a couple of runs over 20 and scoring consistently well at each visit to win 200-117.

Western fought out a tight game with Jason Devanney, the pair locked at 60, 104 and 167 before the Chapel Green player made a telling 24 to win 200-172.

Chapel Green’s final two players had to win collectively by 195 points to guarantee their club the title but Ken Jennings and Ossie McGann performed admirably against Bob Husband and Dave Saxton respectively.

Jennings was beaten 200-132 and McGann lost out 200-140 but the duo had done enough to secure the shield, which will now have their name etched on it for both 1910 and 2010.

The BRADFORD SNOOKER CHAMPIONSHIP final takes place on Saturday at Eccleshill Victoria Conservative Club on Victoria Road.

It features current Yorkshire champion Gareth Green of Manningham Ward, competing in his first district final, against Undercliffe Cricket Club’s Dave Stirk.

Green had been in impressive form in the semi-finals with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over an out-of-sorts John Wellham.

But Stirk was made to work hard for his second appearance in the final – his last being in 1990, when he lost out to Dave Wilson – with a 4-2 win against defending champion Ilyas Khan.

The club opens at 7.30pm and the match is due to start at 8pm.
