Lee Lawton (Lower Hopton) beat Nigel Roper (Littlemoor) 21-9 to win the first Giles Insurance Shipley CLASSIC.

Both finalists had played superbly throughout the day but unfortunately Roper could not find his form in the decider as Lawton was always in control.

Lawton had survived a tough quarter-final against Craig Gant (Netherton Cons) 21-17 before coasting through his semi-final against Andy Deighton (Bridlington) 21-12. Roper, on the other hand, defeated Andy Cairns (Rossendale) 21-16 before taking out favourite Graeme Wilson (Lower Hopton) 21-9 in the semi-finals.

Quarter-finals: N Roper (Littlemoor) 21, A Cairns (Rossendale) 16; A Whittaker (Meersbrook) 8, GI Wilson (Lower Hopton) 21; S Fisher (Denby Grange) 16, A Deighton (Bridlington) 21; C Gant (Netherton Cons) 17, Lawton (Lower Hopton) 21. Semi-finals: Roper 21, Wilson 9; Deighton 12, Lawton 21. Final: Roper 9, Lawton 21.

Yorkshire put in a terrific performance against East Midlands to record an overall 423-406 win and an 18-13 result as they moved top of section A in the BRITISH PARKS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS.

In the home leg at Pudsey Bowling Club, Yorkshire carded eight individual winners out of 12, with Chris Mordue (21-7) and Dave Cooper (21-8) in top form and Stuart King (21-10) named man of the match after a superb display. Mick Smith (21-11) put in an outstanding performance on the difficult No 2 green at Belvedere, which even left the hosts in disbelief. Yorkshire now head into their final game against Wallasey next month as clear favourites to reach the semi-finals in August.
