There were two close encounters in the first round of the Bower Cup, and Yeadon Celtic experienced the highs and lows of handicap table tennis.

Yeadon B met Hermits A, and Ian Marshall proved the match winner in a tight contest.

Marshall won both his singles as Yeadon led by 11 points after the six singles but there are three doubles matches in the Summer Cup competition, and fortunes can change.

Marshall featured in the first two doubles with Youi Caspi and Chris Sanderson and Yeadon increased their lead to 15 points.

Caspi and Sanderson then kept their noses in front in the first doubles to put Yeadon B into the second round.

Yeadon C travelled to Unity A and looked on course to join their team-mates in the next round when their trio of Manu Younis, Fred Young and Tony Lupton had a ten-point lead after the singles, despite Ian Gomersal winning both his matches for Unity.

Younis and Lupton increased the lead to 15 points in the first doubles but Steve Whitaker turned the match around for Unity as he partnered Jim Felby and Theo Gomersal to win the last two doubles and put Unity through.
