Stanningley came so close to logging a maximum haul as they opened the Saturday season with a 29-1 demolition of West in the Bartle League.

Captain Mabel Shaw and Harold Smith led the way with 21-6 victories in the only league action of the opening week.

Stanningley had a full card and were close to claiming a 30-0 success, with promoted West needing to improve dramatically if they are to compete in this division.

Crowghyll opened with an impressive 18-12 victory at Oakenshaw, with captain Alan Clements in superb form as he beat Stuart England 21-5.

Denis Thorpe's return to Crowghyll will surely boost his team-mates and, with the likes of Tony Walton and Craig Fenton also on board, they will be among the promotion favourites.

Bramley Libs B also got off to a flier with a 24-6 home victory over Bowling A.

Len Robinson had a terrific 21-9 verdict over John Armit-age, with Jeff Pickles the only winner for Bowling as he saw off Patricia Sunderland 21-11.

Bramley will be tough to beat with the experience of Norman Wilkinson and Peter Howarth in their ranks.

Clayton B edged a 16-14 win at Greengates, which included a decisive 21-5 success for Andy Southwell over Bryn Jones. Ron Bradley replied with a 21-8 victory over David Lord.

Lister A go from strength to strength as they opened with a 19-11 victory at Drighlington.

Andy Smith had a fantastic 21-9 win over Margaret Lee but Lister responded through Nino Esposito (21-9), Ian Spence (21-8) and David Bottomley (21-9) to ensure a comfortable margin.
