Young diving sensation Sam Thornton, aged 13 from Shipley, was chosen from hopefuls all over the UK to be mentored by his Olympic hero Nick Robinson-Baker.

Sam went over to the Diving Centre of Excellence in Sheffield last Saturday to receive a masterclass from his diving idol as part of the Kellogg’s Champions of Tomorrow scheme.

The project is part of Kellogg’s’ ongoing commitment to British swimming and aims to help inspire young stars as they rise through the ranks.

Thornton received support and advice from Rob-inson-Baker, as well as a grant from Kellogg’s to help fund training, kit and competition entry.

The youngster said: “The day was amazing. The best bit was doing the synchronised swimming with Nick and jumping off the ten-metre platform.

“It was a little bit scary but really fun. Nick’s a great inspiration to me. I’m really happy I’ve had the chance to train with him.”

Robinson-Baker said: “I really enjoyed meeting Sam and I was amazed at how good he is already.

“The scheme is really imp-ortant because so many kids drop out of sport when they hit their teens. I did for a while but fortunately I had a great coach that got me back on the straight and narrow.

“Diving has given me so much, so if I can help these kids on their path to success by giving them my time and advice, that makes me feel really proud.”

David Sparkes, chief executive of British Swimming, added: “Every promising young swimmer dreams of making it to an Olympics or Paralympics but when you’re training in your local pool day in, day out, it can sometimes seem like an unachievable dream.

“All of the Team Kellogg’s athletes have been there, and their experience and support will only help to inspire those they are mentoring.

“I’m delighted our current stars are helping to develop the athletes of the future.”
