Bradford's biggest swimming event reaches its 25th anniversary this weekend.

Entrants from all over the North of England will take to the water on Saturday and Sunday at Shipley Pool in the City of Bradford Swimming Club's Christmas Open Meet.

Competitors for the Level One contest will be coming from Liverpool, Barnsley, Salford, Hull, Doncaster and Rotherham, as well as Bradford and Kirklees.

Swimmers will be trying to record qualifying times for championships next year.

But there will also be a charity fun race on Sunday, featuring 30 former swimmers, Masters participants and club coaching staff.

The Not So Nifty 50 race will raise money for Jane's Appeal, established by the late Jane Tomlinson to raise funds for children's and cancer charities.

The charity aspect was introduced in 2005 in honour of Bradford Council's swimming development manager Sheila Dennison, who died from cancer.

Other charities to benefit from the race include the Breast Cancer Campaign and Asthma UK.

Steve Warner, head of sport and leisure at Bradford Council, said: "The Shipley Christmas meet is the showcase swimming event of the year in the Bradford district and will once again feature some of the best talent from all over the UK.

"It has been held for a quarter of a century now, and it is always a great spectacle with a tremendous atmosphere and is enjoyed by swimmers and spectators alike."

Session times are 9am and 2pm on both days.

Meanwhile, City of Brad-ford's age-group entrants competed in Harrogate for the North-East Region BAGCAT Championships.

Sian Morgan won City's only gold medal in the girls' 100 metres butterfly in a time of 1min 05.87sec. She also went on to win silver in the 100m and 200m freestyle.

Newcomers to the North-East rostrum were ten-year-old Ellie Talbot of Keighley, 13-year-old Hannah Midgley and 14-year-old George Mack.

Talbot finished with a silver in the 100m backstroke and a bronze in the 100m freestyle.

Midgley and Mack both won medals in the 1,500m event, finishing in very creditable times of 19min 05.39sec and 17min 19.23sec respectively.

These gave Midgley a silver and Mack a bronze.

Niki Chatburn came fourth place in the girls' 11 years' 100m breaststroke and and Sam O'Donohoe was seventh in the boys' 13 years' 100m freestyle and eighth in the 100m backstroke.
