A KEIGHLEY-based boxer hopes to fight his way to national glory this weekend.

Muhammed Ibrahim Nadim, 19, will face John O'Meara, of Dale Youth in London, in the 52-56kg category final at the prestigious England Boxing National Amateur Championships 2019 Finals Day at Manchester Central on Saturday.

He reached the final after winning three fights at the finals qualifying event held in Nottingham last weekend.

Nadim won his first fight at the event, a pre-quarter-final, beating Scot Melvin, of Eastside Boxing Club, on a split decision.

He went on to beat John Harker on a unanimous decision in the quarter-final and beat Connor Adaway, of Incense ABC, on another unanimous decision in the semi-final to reach the Manchester final.

Nadim shows his dedication to the sport by travelling from his Keighley home to his club, Bury ABC, in Greater Manchester.

His trainer, Mick Jelley, who guided the early careers of Amir Khan and Scott Quigg, hopes Nadim can grab the national victory on Saturday.

Jelley said: "He did absolutely brilliantly in his fights last weekend.

"We are hoping to get another ABA Champion on Saturday. It's in the lap of the Gods who will win it, you never know in sport. You can only try your best.

"We are going there and trying our best to win.

"It's the pinnacle of amateur boxing to get to win a ABA title. There is only one more hurdle to be national champion.

"He is 19 now and has been training with us for nine years. He travels over to Bury from his home in Keighley. It's an hour each way.

"He will do his best and I'm praying he is going to do it."
