BINGLEY ANGLING CLUB

Rivers should be worth a try this weekend with the extra water before the season ends on Thursday.

The canal is still producing good nets of small fish especially around the boats at Crossflatts.

BRADFORD No1 AA

This Sunday the River Nidd at Cowthorpe will be closed for the final open match of the river season. Tickets are available from Simon on 01274 571175 and the draw will take place at 9am in the lay-by.

Gratrix Dam has been producing some outstanding catches of big ide, chub and roach on waggler and maggot with nets over 40lbs being caught regularly. There have also been great catches of bream and roach from Shelf Dam on similar tactics.

Well today has seen the group up at Tollerton ponds fishing heron lake.

With the fish continuing to bounce around the pegs on the boats and gooseanders still being a major problem, last week's winner, Paul McMillan, Matrix Halifax, came from permanent peg 23, with a weight of 7lb 4oz.

Other results: 2 Tony Price, Matrix Waynes Tackle, 5lb 5oz; 3 Nigel Storr, Matrix Halifax, 4lb 5oz; 4 Stephen Webster, Tricast Calder, 3lb 8oz. Please ensure you book on for this Sunday's match before 7pm Saturday with Richard East, on 07815 092966.

On last week's river match weights should have been better as a few big fish were lost off by different anglers on the day.

Results: 1 Ian Needs 5lbs 8oz one barbel; 2 James Vickerman 4lbs 8oz one barbel; 3 Dave Pitts 3lbs 8oz one chub; 4 Carl Chadwick 3lbs 5oz one barbel; 5 Peter Vickerman 2lbs 13oz one chub.

It was a case of how big your one fish was. This was the last river match of this season. All the river is open to pleasure anglers for the last weekend and it may well be worth a visit with the extra water that will have gone through.

Thanks to all the lads who fished all the matches for their support, even though it’s been tough this winter.

Tong Park has had a stocking of 12,000 roach and skimmers last week. Work has been carried out on the bankside vegetation and this will continue to be done over the coming months.

More dye has been added to combat the weed problem which we have seen in the previous years and we will continue to monitor it and take action when needed.

Any catch reports from any of our waters are welcome to help plan future restocking programmes.

This weekend will be the last in the present coarse fishing season for river fishing in Yorkshire, which closes at midnight on March 14 and re-opens on June 16.

Most still waters and canals no longer have a close season and are therefore open for angling all the year round.

The few waters that still retain a close season follow the same dates as for rivers.

Since January, the Environment Agency have been consulting on the coarse fish close season.

If you would like to put your views forward, there is just enough time to complete the survey online this weekend with the last day being March 11.

Type in 'Coarse fish close season on English Rivers – Environment Agency' and click on the tab at the foot of the first page entitled respond online.

With the weather becoming more seasonally normal following Storm Freya last weekend, the level of the River Aire only rose a small amount and should be in a decent condition for the last few days of the season.

Plenty of anglers have taken advantage of the recent mild spell although not many coarse fish have been caught.

Chub have continued to remain elusive and grayling have not been caught in any quantity.

A few pike have been landed from the Snaygill deep water stretches on dead bait whilst the number and quality of the brown trout caught in the Skipton length augers well for the new season which commences on March 25.

Fishing on Embsay Reservoir ended on a rather quiet note with the unseasonal weather failing to bring about an improvement.

The reservoir is now closed to fishing and will be restocked with rainbows and blue trout before opening day on March 25.

Whinnygill Reservoir and the local length of the canal did finally respond to the milder weather and produced reasonable sport for roach, perch, skimmers. Both waters are unaffected by the coarse fish close season.

Skipton AA members are reminded that subscriptions are now due and no fishing may take place until they have been renewed.

The fees are the same as last year and the membership secretary wishes to remind members to ensure that they enclose a SAE with their subscription payment.
