BRADFORD AND DISTRICT SEA ANGLING CLUB

The club's general meeting on February 19 was well attended, and much was discussed mainly on trips.

All trophies were brought back ready to be engraved, ready for our presentation evening on March 19. We are going to try and book a trip to Anglesey When the details come through.

Some of our members are off to Clare Island on the West coast of Ireland in May on Darragh McGee's boat 'White Water II' so that will be something to look forward to, given good weather it will see plenty of fish.

We also have some of our members going to the Shetlands for four days in July. And some members are of to Culdaff in County Donegal in August. This being 25 years of fishing there.

Knotford Lagoon has been well patronised recently, however the temperatures need to be higher for a period of time before the carp will respond.

A bream of 10lb 8oz was caught during a night session. Members are warned to check that the ground is not too damp before bringing vehicles in.

LISTERHILLS AA

The pike fishing trip last weekend proved successful with all who attended catching something.

E Harrison had the best return with eight fish which included two doubles.

Static baits proved the most successful as opposed to those who adopted lure fishing.

Members requiring Leeds Amalgamation membership should note that when it is obtained through our club it is cheaper than when obtained by some other sources.

Anyone wishing to represent the club in the National Championship on the Shropshire Union canal in September should register their nomination as soon as possible.

SKIPTON AA

The change to rather unseasonal temperatures and reasonably decent weather certainly brought the anglers out in force last weekend, especially on the River Aire where all the popular parking spots were occupied by vehicles.

Sport was quite good but unfortunately it was mainly with the out of season brown trout which readily took any bait offered.

Some decent fish turned up to well over the 1,000g mark, but where were the chub and grayling that should be featuring in catches at this time of the year.

Some Skipton members believe that the chub are present but they are rather cagey and therefore difficult to entice.

Ground baiting does not help as it only attracts trout into the swim and once they are there they are the quickest to the hook bait every time.

It could be that there are not all that many chub around, especially big fish over the 1,800g mark.

Remember it is only three or four years ago that the chub revival started and the early fry will still be relatively small.

With regard to the grayling it’s not been a particularly good season for them with last summer’s drought followed by a wet and coolish winter.

Catches have been poor for some time and one local angler reported not catching a single fish for a month on each side of Christmas.

Last weekend could have been good for pike fishing with the river down to a decent angling level. In the event I only saw one angler intent on fishing for pike but he had not even tackled up when I approached him.

Apparently Embsay Reservoir has been poor for the rainbow trout and few have been caught up to recently.

The reservoir is a cold place at this time of the year but the water will be starting to warm up so may produce some better fishing until it closes for fishing from February 28 to March 24, both days inclusive.

Prospects for this weekend should be even better with a forecast of temperatures approaching 17C which should benefit all the local fisheries.
