QAIS Khalid claimed a debut win and the seventh consecutive victory for Lights Out Boxing Academy.

The Bradford youngster earned a split decision in a close 59kg contest with host opponent Charlie Wilson at Selby Academy's show.

Lights Out coach Inzar Ahmed said: "Qais was made to wait for 12 months before having his first bout.

"He started boxing in the B team and after six months would ask me when he would move up to the A team.

"Some coaches are just throwing young men into the ring and having their confidence shattered. It may have taken 12 months but the victory was sweet and I couldn’t have asked for anything better."

Qais started fast in round one before his opponent fought back in the second to even up the bout, only for the Lights Out youngster to come out blazing in the final round to claim victory.

"We got the win on a split decision and it's another fantastic example of young men coming in to the gym and changing their lives around."

Ahmed said the Girlington-based club's success had attracted more youngsters wanting to sign up.

"Since the wins our phone line has been going crazy with lots of young kids wanting to join."
