BRADFORD CITY AA

WE’VE seen some sunshine this week but also cold northerly winds and heavy rain. However, the wind has now swung into the south-west quadrant and the forecast for the weekend is warmer with slight breezes. Rivers are at good levels, though the Aire is still low.

Anglers have been on the banks now that spring has arrived in earnest. At Oakworth Ponds, bailiff Michael Whiteoak reports plenty of anglers seeing hard-fighting carp to 8lb, as well as roach coming to nets. At Shipton, Tony Stockdale had some nice tench to about 6lb on a chilly day and another on a short evening session. Our Staveley Lakes fishery is also producing good-looking fish for anglers such as Josh Henderson, while Carl White had a mega-session of 19 carp across the weekend.

On the game-fishing front, the water is still cold but fish are coming to nets as well. At Burley on the Wharfe, Will Gill had a nice brown trout, while on the Ribble, Nick Cowburn reported some nice trout and out-of-season grayling.

We currently have a litter problem at Oakworth, with a small minority of anglers spoiling it for everyone else, leaving litter in pegs and throwing it over the fence. If any angler sees this type of behaviour, please report it to any committee member for appropriate action.

This week is the last for bookings for the Wild Trout Trust annual get-together at Gargrave on the weekend of May 19-20, contact Christina Bryant (02392-570985). We are holding an open day on Saturday, June 2, at Broughton on the River Aire (10am). Demonstrations start at 10.30am, and there will be river-fly invertebrate sampling, bug-hunting, river and conservation walks, try-a-fly and casting tuition, plus a barbecue and refreshments, with all anglers welcome. More details can be had from Phil Bailey (07811 286652).

We also plan a work party on the Swale at Topcliffe on Sunday, June 10 to repair stiles, pick up winter-flood litter, create new pegs and improve access in readiness for the start of the river coarse-fishing season. If you can help, please contact Jim Munden (07940-814431).

Our next match is the JD Illingworth Rosebowl at Staveley Lakes on Saturday, May 12. Contact John Stark (07793 558227) if you wish to enter or have any queries. River Worth Friends are having a stakeholder event on Friday, May 11, at Central Hall, Keighley (7pm-9pm). This will provide opportunities to meet, discuss, and network about River Worth partnerships, recreation, well-being, community involvement, education, arts and culture, flood alleviation and habitat improvement. Further details from Phil Sheridan on philip-sheridan.com.
