THE Eastern Masters Veterans' Tournament in Norwich proved to be a happy hunting ground for the Yorkshire contingent.

Pride of place went to Pudsey's Sandra Rider, who was successful in two events.

Seeded No 2, she began her quest for honours on day one in the ladies' 60s singles, and had no trouble coming through her group, winning all three matches in straight games.

The ladies' doubles was next on the agenda, and this was a round-robin contest with three pairs, with Sandra being partnered by Sheila King (Sussex).

Calculators were needed as all of the pairs won one and lost one, but, after a countback of games, Rider and King were champions.

The knockout stages of the singles took place on day two, and Sandra continued her good form, overcoming Marilyn Bawden (Essex) 3-0 in the quarter-finals and King 3-1 in the semi-finals.

Helen Shields, from Fastbats, was in the other half of the draw and also reached the last four, but went down 3-2 to top seed Teresa Devaney (Ireland).

The final was closely fought, but Sandra came through 11-6 in the fifth to complete a fine double.

Phil Cawser (Dewsbury Tog) had another excellent tournament, taking the mens 60s doubles title and reaching the semi-finals of the 60s singles before bowing out to former Yorkshire and England star Tony Clayton.

In the Bradford League, Division Three leaders Hermits E maintained their 100 per cent record after overcoming a spirited challenge from Baildon C.

Shirley Toulmin won two and John Jennison one for Baildon but the leaders were not to be denied as Stuart Beaumont won all three and Mohammed Murtaza added two and Azim Afzal one as Hermits won 7-3.
