Asa Briggs' Glen McCafferty was the winner of the St Enoch's Garage-sponsored Bradford Merit, after beating Pudsey's Gary Wike 21-13 in the final at Low Moor Harold.

McCafferty followed up his success in the Bradford Pairs Merit with James Senior in 2005 with his first major individual title.

McCafferty and Wike had bowled fantastically well all day, and Wike probably started the final as favourite after beating County duo Ian Shaw 21-12 in the last 16 and Daniel Metcalfe 21-15 in the quarter-final.

Wike had also seen off Crossroads' Richard Hargreaves 21-12 in the semi-final.

McCafferty had made it to the final with wins over Shipley Club's Adrian Briggs 21-13, Ladyhill's Kim Ramsden 21-15 and Paul Gill 21-10 in the semi-final.

Gill had put out last year's winner Tony Riley 21-10 in the quarter-finals.

McCafferty was always in control in the final, and on this form will surely be a winner again soon.

The home match was played at Clayton, and Yorkshire would have been disappointed at the state of the Clayton green, as Yorkshire only mustered five home winners: Richard Dunhill (Crossroads) 21-17, Steve Cooper (Ladyhill) 21-20, Steve Foster (Brighouse) 21-18, Thomas Hanson (Pudsey) 21-12 and Chris Mordue (Brighouse) 21-17.

Yorkshire went down 9-5 at Clayton, with South Yorkshire taking the three bonus points for the overall aggregate.

Suzie Jagger (21-8) was one of only two home winners for Cleckheaton Sports as they went down 23-7 at home to Birkenshaw, who remain top of the table. Anthony Hatherley (21-6) and Donald Ingle (21-6) were the pick of eight away winners for Birkenshaw.

Peel B won their first game of the season with a narrow 17-13 win over Horsforth Woodside B, thanks to Roy Burton (21-4) and Arthur Rooney (21-8).

Asa Briggs C remain unbeaten with eight away winners as they won 22-8 at Horton B. Ashley Southwell (21-3) was the pick of the winners for Asa.

Peel C beat Oakenshaw B 18-12 in a high-scoring game. Oakenshaw B only dropped 22 points and would have been disappointed to card only three winners and leave with only 12 points.

Knowles B remain second in the league after a great 20-10 win at Bowling B, thanks largely to Jack McLoughlin (21-4). Crowghyll B remain third after defeating Lister B 21-9, Fred Dalby 21-8 the best of seven home winners.

Guiseley C edged home 17-13 at Wibsey C in the Mellor League, but remain second bottom.

However, if they continue with this form, they will soon be moving up the table.

Wibsey D managed their second win of the season with an 18-12 win at West Bradford B, despite Peter Damant's 21-6 for the hosts, and Bradford Moor B moved above Brackenhill B as they won 19-11, thanks to a great 21-6 from John Pitts.

Brenda Denny produced a great 21-1 for Shipley Club and, assisted by Margaret Spivey (21-5) and Martin Crabtree (21-6), they won 21-9 at Bowling B, who are still looking for their first victory.
