The West Yorkshire Fire Service's annual five-mile race was a great success, with nearly 200 finishers.

Sunday's event attracted some good quality local club runners and firefighters from Essex, the north of England and Strathclyde.

Organiser Dave Teggart explained: "The start was moved to the Fire Service HQ in Birkenshaw. This way the runners start and finish within a few yards of each other, making the viewing and logistics for the event a little easier.

"The heat and final climb up Whitehall Road did its usual damage to the runners."

The women's course record was, however, broken by a considerable margin by Josie Grey from Birchfield Harriers in Birmingham in a time of 29min 5sec. The men's race was won by Mike O'Neill (from Greater Manchester FS) in 27.14, well ahead of Keighley & Craven's Marco Gvero in 28.06.

Local firefighters Dave Smith (29.09) and Will Kerr (30.01), the latter running for St Bede's, were both in the top dozen finishers.
