SKIPTON AA

The club's inaugural open fly match on Embsay Reservoir was fished in decent conditions which resulted in plenty of rainbow, brown and tiger trout coming to the net. Those who recorded the most bites, however, were the hoards of midges which kept the competitors scratching for most of Sunday's three-hour match.

Geoff Hanson had four rainbows to easily win with 1930g, while Matthew Mathew caught two tigers for 1205g in second spot. The partnership of Simon Chenier and Dave Martin recorded just a brown and a tiger for a third-place weight of 880g. Other leading weights (both a single rainbow trout) were Graeme Waterfall (725g) and Peter Kinch (540g).

Members have been enjoying good catches of coarse fish on Whinnygill Reservoir and the newly-acquired length of the canal, mainly on Broughton Road. Alan Wade had four good bream plus some decent roach and perch, while Kenny Wright has been making the canal his own with excellent mixed bags of bream, roach, perch and gudgeon in the vicinity of the bowling club. Catches of up to 3640g of fish in three hours have not been uncommon.

This length will be the venue for Sunday's members 'fun' match, the draw to be held at the top of Sawley Street at 8.15am with fishing from 9am-noon. Anyone wishing to fish this length must be either a Skipton AA member or in possession of a valid day ticket, which cost £3 or, if obtained on the bank, £5.

One water that is not receiving much attention at the moment is the River Aire, which is in good condition following a series of freshlets during August. Just one month remains of the brown trout season, so maybe now is the time to try and land that end-of-season specimen.

BRADFORD No1 AA

Some sections of the river will be closed on Sunday for round five of the Calder League. Punky's 8 lead the series with 31 points, 8.5 ahead of Mirfield. Queen Mary's Ponds in Ripon are fishing well, with numerous catches of tench over 4lb and bream over 6lb in recent weeks. One of the local bailiffs has also reported the capture of two mirror carp over 26lb, thought to be the largest in the lakes, as well as a number of the new stock of carp showing excellent weight gains to over 12lb. Anglers at Chellow Dene have been rewarded with good nets of skimmer bream, roach and perch, while Darek Paczkowski caught a small catfish from the lake this week.
