BRADFORD CITY AA

Duffer's Fortnight – the main annual Mayfly hatch – has now started, with fly-fishing members netting (and returning) some good trout on the club’s River Aire fisheries.

Dave Martin was very pleased to have a fantastic fish of about 5lb 8oz, and another of over 3lb. Alex Shaw, from Doncaster, had two trout of over 2lb and one of 3lb in an afternoon’s fishing, while Stephen McGuigan had a fish of similar size.

On the club’s Shipton Lake, large hatches of flies and midges have slowed catch results. However, anglers report nets of up to 50lb of bream, roach and skimmers, while Alan Robinson landed an 18lb common carp. At Staveley, the large lake has fished well this week too, with successful anglers using feeder rods to fish castors and maggots to the islands. Nets have included tench to 6lb, bream to 7lb 8oz and roach to around 1lb, plus pike and carp.

Result of local challenge match last Saturday at Staveley Lakes: 1 D Crawford 9lb 9oz, 2 M Dowdall 8lb 7oz (ide and skimmers), 3 B Newby 5lb 14oz (bream). The next BCAA match is the Morphet Cup for veterans at Staveley Lakes on Saturday, June 6. To book on, or for more information, contact Rod Brooksbank on 07875-275749.

BCAA will have a stand at the Fly Fishing Show at Burnsall on Sunday, June 7, and there will be working parties at Shipton Lakes over the weekend of June 13-14. More details of both, and information about the club, can be obtained from Jim Munden on 07940-814431.

Anglers are reminded again that gates should be closed on all waters. Queen Mary’s Ponds at Ripon are fishing very well for tench, averaging at over 5lb, bream and carp, while Raskelf Lake is continuing to produce nets of over 50lb of F1’s and tench. Reports of carp over 20lb being caught at Knotford and Kirklees are being regularly received. Club polo shirts and baseball hats are available to purchase from the website (www.bradfordno1.com).
