Dougie Lampkin missed the grand final of the opening round of the FIM World Indoor Trials Championship by two points in Granada, Spain.

The seven-time world champion failed the opening section but, after that initial error, held his nerve to take fourth place but missed the final cut for the podium.

While neither Lampkin nor Takahisa Fujinami made the top three on their Repsol Montesa HRC machines, new signing Toni Bou stormed to victory on an identical Repsol Montesa.

That left world champion Adam Raga and Fajardo in second and third positions respectively.

The whole picture changed when Albert Cabestany wrecked the suspension unit of his Sherco machine and retired.

Two days earlier, the indoor action centred on Toulouse where Lampkin scored another fourth place but no world points were at stake.

After the Granada result Lampkin said: "The win by Toni Bou on the Repsol Montesa HRC has set both Fujinami and myself a new bench mark. He has shown just what the bike is capable of. I rode well in places and terrible in others."

  • James Lampkin hit the jackpot at Bayliss Gap Farm where he won his first major event of the year at the Wetherby Motor Club's annual Filtrate Trophy Trial at Bewerley.
The JLI Beta that Lampkin rode in the Scott Trial last October to 11th place had not turned a wheel until the morning of the event so the Silsden property repair specialist had to get out his tools and give the Italian machine its routine check.

West Leeds member Liam Walker was a close second with Richmond's John Sunter in third place.

Penalties on sections seven and ten cost Skipton footwear retailer Aran Drachenberg a podium place in the expert class, just two marks ahead of Silsden occupational therapist Adrian Harry.

Eldwick's Paul Jackson was the top clubman rider.
