Wind and heavy rain have spoilt fishing over Christmas and new year, and there have been few reports from anglers. However, a member visiting from Hertfordshire had a 2lb 12oz grayling on trotted worm on the club’s River Ribble fishery just after Christmas, and a guest from Holland, fishing for grayling on Boxing Day, caught a good out-of-season trout of about 3lb at Carleton on the River Aire. This was safely returned to the water.

The BCAA 2014 match fishing calendar can be seen on the club’s website. Bookings can be made via the match secretary on 07875-275749. The next match is booked for a week on Saturday at Staveley Lakes, though members should always phone the match secretary beforehand to check for any changes in arrangements.

KEIGHLEY AC

Storms and plummeting temperatures failed to dampen the spirits of anglers who turned out in two festive challenge matches on the canal at Silsden. In the first leg, Jack Ferguson opted for bread punch fished with pole, and weighed in with nine bream totalling 17lb to take the top cash prize. Robert Judson (5lb 13oz) was runner-up and Dave Parkinson (2lb 10oz) came third.

The final rain-lashed competition proved a bridge too far, even for the most accomplished competitors. Despite a variety of tactics to combat high winds and an unrelenting storm, the fish remained unimpressed by the variety of bait on offer. Lines twitched occasionally but in the end there was little more to record than a few bites and nibbles. But that’s fishing!

Meanwhile, away from competition, although the River Aire remains swollen, the canal has much to offer, with reports of good-quality bream being caught on bread and maggot. Several pike have also been netted with deadbait and spinners.

Club secretary Dennis Freeman has issued a reminder that the club’s yearbooks are now available to buy at Keighley Tackle shop, adding that Keighley waters remain in great condition, and a recent re-stocking means that members have good reason to look forward to fishing in 2014.
