EVERTON midfielder Jenson Metcalfe was at Valley Parade to watch City’s friendly against Middlesbrough.

The 20-year-old could become the ninth signing of the summer, although the Telegraph & Argus understands that no deal has been completed at this stage.

Graham Alexander played it down when asked after City’s 2-0 win about Metcalfe, who scored his first senior goal against them on loan at Chesterfield in April.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I’ve just been focusing on the game.

“Every matchday, everyone leaves me alone to concentrate on that game. I know it’s pre-season but it’s just about the game.

“We’re not looking for a big influx of players. We’re probably after two right now to improve us as a squad and bring in extra quality and competition.

“It’s a time thing. Sometimes you just have to be patient and that’s what we’re trying to be.”

Tyler Smith and Adam Wilson were again not part of the squad last night. Clarke Oduor was also not involved as City look to balance the numbers with the senior players up to the limit.

Alexander added: “I’ve been honest with all our players and certainly the ones that were not involved.

“I’ve had the conversation that I had maybe 12 months ago with a couple of individuals. I don’t believe in grey areas for players.

“It’s important they have a clear idea how the whole scenario is. But we always treat them with the respect they deserve.

“We’ll just see if there’s any solutions to their situation. They are good players that need to play football.”
