BRADFORD Bulls’ great rivals Halifax Panthers have staved off the imminent threat of being liquidated.
The Betfred Championship side have had a poor season in terms of results, though now look likely to avoid relegation, but there were far bigger problems for them off the field.
With their finances in a dire state due to, among other reasons, sponsors going into administration and poor crowds, players and staff had gone unpaid.
And with the club owing thousands of pounds to HMRC, they were the subject to a winding up petition, which was due to be today.
However, a combination of commercial activity, accelerated RFL payments and the generosity of the fans and sponsors means their outstanding bill to HMRC has been paid.
Interim chairman Lee Kenny insists the club are not out of the woods yet, saying: “While this safeguards the club’s immediate future, there is still a lot of work to be done to tackle the long-term financial challenges facing the club.
“Our attention now turns to ensuring all players and staff receive the remainder of the wages that were due on September 1 as soon as possible.
“With only one remaining home game this season, which is against Bradford Bulls on Sunday, September 22, we urge all fans, especially those who haven’t been to The Shay in some time, to mark the date in the calendar and turn up in force.”
