BRADFORD Bulls’ trio of new Australian signings all played their part in the team’s excellent 28-10 win over Sheffield Eagles in the Betfred Championship on Sunday.

But it could be the last we see of two-try hero Zac Fulton for some time, with the second row forced off with a calf injury late on.

After the game, Bulls head coach Eamon O’Carroll told the T&A: “Hopefully it’s not a big issue.

"But we know Zac’s tough, so the way he told us he had to come off, I think it would be something fairly significant, which is a real shame if that’s the case.

He’s great for us, everyone gets to see what he does on the field, but I get to see what he does of it too, with his standards and his training.

“We’ve got a good core group here now that want to be here, training really hard and they’re really adding to what we do.

“And with Zac, he’s really important to us within that.”

If Fulton’s injury was one of the only real negatives for Bulls on Sunday, one enormous high point was a senior debut for 18-year-old back row Jacob Bateman.

The teenager comes from good stock, as a relative of current Wests Tigers second rower John, one of Bulls’ best players over the last two decades.

But this is the youngster’s time to shine at Odsal now, with O’Carroll saying: “It was good to give Jacob his debut, but I was disappointed I had to give him a call to tell him he was playing, rather than in person at training.

“It’s a special moment as a coach to tell someone they’re being handed their debut, because you think back to when you were the one making yours all those years ago.

“Jacob’s grandad and his dad are here with him today, and some other members of his family presented him his jersey, so you get to see the impact that it has on them.

“Jacob’s a Bradford lad, he’s a great kid, he got his opportunity and I’m really happy for him.”

Bateman came on for the final few minutes against Sheffield, once the contest was pretty much done and dusted.

The likes of Eribe Doro, Keven Appo and more had earlier had to put in monumental defensive shifts to pave the way to victory for injury-hit Bulls.

O’Carroll was asked if this result was a real shot in the arm for his side going into this coming weekend’s trip to Batley, especially given their last two games at Odsal had ended in defeat.

He said: “It’s really important the boys enjoy this win for a couple of days.

“But as soon as we’re back in training, we look at the game, reinforce the messages that we have for them throughout the week, spend some time together, and then focus on Batley, which is going to be a tough match.”
