CITY are expected to appoint David Sharpe in a new senior football role this week, according to a report today.

Football Insider claim the grandson of former Wigan owner Dave Whelan is set to take the job at Valley Parade.

But the T&A understands it is definitely NOT as head of recruitment – the position held by Stephen Gent - as the story suggested.

Sharpe, a close associate of City CEO Ryan Sparks, has been out of the game since leaving his position as Mansfield chief executive last summer.

He had previously spent a three-and-a-half year spell as chairman at Wigan up to November 2018.

Sharpe became the youngest chairman in the domestic game when he was appointed by the Latics at the age of 23. Now 32, he is five months older than Sparks.

Mansfield owners John and Carolyn Radford paid a glowing tribute on Sharpe’s Stags exit in July – and revealed that he had turned down offers from other clubs during his time there.

Their statement at the time said: “He has an exceptional reputation as a first-class operator within football.”

City owner Stefan Rupp confirmed in his open letter to supporters last week that a new addition would be brought into the football department following his discussions with Sparks in Munich.

Rupp said: “Ryan expressed a desire to add to that operation and assist our existing staff to achieve better outcomes. Ryan will be able to share more details on this matter before the season ends.”
