MARK Hughes insisted he intended to fight on as speculation mounted about his City future.

Tonight’s 2-1 loss at Tranmere, who had lost eight of their previous 10 games, dropped the Bantams to 18th.

Away fans chanted “you’re getting sacked in the morning” at Hughes when he went over to clap them after the final whistle.

Asked if he felt he would remain in charge, Hughes said: “Absolutely, yeah. I’m here to do the job I was asked to.

“We’ll continue to work hard with the guys. The guys are totally behind us.

“We’re just in a (bad) period and people have got to keep their nerve and understand this happens in football and in sport.

“It’s not a given. You can do all the right things in sport and still get beaten and that’s what has happened on occasions for us.

“Tonight wasn’t to be but we’ll need to move on.”

Following on from Saturday’s home loss to Walsall, it was City’s fourth defeat in their first 11 league games.

“We’re just in a period where we are struggling to convert games into points on the board,” added Hughes.

“If the team looked disorganised or a team lacking energy, focus or energy then I’d be more concerned. But they are not.

“They are a good team, a good group of players to work with. They kept their confidence today and kept going.

“They can turn it round because they are good players.

“It’s just a period that you have during a season. You can have it beginning, middle or end, it doesn’t matter really.

“But at the beginning of the season people seem to assume that’s how it’s going to be all season. That’s not the case.”

Alex Pattison went off in the first half with a recurrence of his hamstring injury.
