CITY will not be heading back to bogey ground Brunton Park next season after Carlisle beat Stockport in this afternoon’s League Two play-off final.

The Cumbrians won 5-4 on penalties at Wembley after the game had finished 1-1 after extra-time.

Former Bantams striker Omari Patrick came off the bench to equalise for Paul Simpson’s side, who knocked out City last week.

Stockport had gone in front after 34 minutes when Isaac Olaofe’s cross deflected off Jon Mellish to loop over keeper Tomas Holy.

Carlisle thought they should have a late penalty for handball when Mellish’s shot was blocked on the line.

But they equalised on 84 minutes through Patrick.

Ex-City winger Jordan Gibson began the move and when Joel Senior’s cross was only half-cleared, Patrick swooped on the rebound to drive in low from just inside the box.

Both keepers made crucial saves in extra-time, Holy to deny Jack Stretton and then Ben Hinchliffe from Kristian Dennis.

And the giant Holy then kept out Ryan Rydel’s effort in the penalty shoot-out as Stockport missed out on the chance of back-to-back promotions.

The Wembley crowd of 34,004 was 4,000 down on the number that had watched the National League decider between Notts County and Chesterfield a fortnight ago.
