EBON Scurr has been challenged to fulfil his talent by producing big performances on a regular basis for the Bulls.

The highly-rated prop is back in action again after being slapped with an eight-match ban for “attacking an opponent’s genitals” on the final day of last season.

Scurr finally returned to the fray in the Challenge Cup romp against York Acorn and followed that up with an impressive Championship outing in the win over Sheffield.

Mark Dunning has been pleased with the response from the 22-year-old following the lengthy enforced lay-off.

But now he wants to see Scurr performing like that week in, week out.

“I’ve coached Ebon since he was 14 years old, so I’ve obviously known about his ability and potential,” said the Bulls chief.

“I think we’re starting to see it. But the challenge for Ebon is doing that week upon week.

“We can’t have stops and starts like he did last year and little bans here and there.”

Scurr made 17 appearances last season and has been linked with Super League interest.

But the incident against Widnes in September, which earned the most serious Grade F rating from the RFL disciplinary panel, has stalled his progress.

Dunning added: “Ebon is maturing, he’s still a young man.

“Everybody here at this club values Ebon and knows his potential. We’ll work closely with him.

“We’ll put an arm round him when we need to and give him a kick up the backside when we feel he needs it as well.

“But there’s nothing but admiration and love for Ebon Scurr, as there is for the rest of the group.

“It’s a real tight-knit group here and we’ll keep working hard together.”

Scurr scored twice in the 11-try hammering of their amateur opponents in the fourth-round cup tie. But Dunning wanted to see him reproduce that form in the much tougher league environment.

“I challenged Ebon on that. I looked him in the eye and said if you can be as good as you were last week then you’ll go a long way in the game - and he came up with it again.

“He’s not as fit as we want him to be just yet. I want to get him to a spot where he can do 50-60 minutes.

“But the 40 odd minutes he did were absolutely outstanding. He’s not played for eight weeks due to the ban.

“That’s his second game of rugby since he got banned at the Widnes game last year.

“Ebon is only going to get better. He’s really enjoying his time at the moment and I think that’s clear for everyone to see.”
