BULLS full-back Elliot Kear admits it has been good to start the last four games in his favoured position.

The Welsh international has turned out at centre, on the wing and even in the halves this season, but it is in the number one jersey that he feels most comfortable.

And he conceded: “I’ve played at full-back in the last few games and it does help when you can string a run of them together, especially in your favoured position.

“But I’ve said to Mark Dunning and the rest of the coaching staff that I’ll play anywhere for them.

“I’m old enough now to slot in where I’m needed and the coaches can rely on me to do that.

“Both our starting halves have been out for a while, and I’ve gone in there, as have young lads that have stepped up like Myles Lawford and Jacob Hookem.

“They’ve done well, and it’s good to see youth flourishing here.”

Bulls’ attacking game has struggled to flourish on their tight Odsal pitch this year though, with one more game there against Widnes on Sunday.

Kear said: “The Odsal pitch isn’t helping, but I’ve stopped using that as an excuse, as it shouldn’t be one.

“Other teams are doing okay on there, so we should be as well.

“It doesn’t help that it’s a bit tight, and you don’t get the space you do at say Halifax, but we have to adapt and overcome the problems it’s given us.”

This weekend represents a reunion for the Wales star with John Kear, who gave him his chance in part-time rugby league with Bradford.

The full-back said: “Obviously John’s my Wales coach too, so we chat a lot.

“I haven’t spoken to him for a bit admittedly, and we haven’t discussed this game at the weekend either.

“It’ll be an interesting match on Sunday, because he’ll really want to win, coming back to his old club.

“It’ll be a good game, and with us holding an emergency services day at Odsal, it should be a real spectacle.

“We want to end the season on a positive note, and try to take away one final win from the season.”

Bulls never looked like winning last weekend, going down 40-12 in their penultimate Championship fixture to Batley.

But 33-year-old Kear said: “We had it tough at Batley.

“With 10 or 15 minutes to go, we’d lost three players to injuries and Tom Doyle was off the field for what I felt was a harsh yellow.

“I’m not sure we even had any subs left by that point, it might have been just one, and we only had 12 men on the field.

“I thought the middles had it tough, and it could easily have been worse than 40-12.

“I thought we did well to keep the score down in truth.”

Bulls will be hoping for a better result against Widnes on Sunday, before Kear’s focus turns to the World Cup, which gets underway next month.

The Wales star said: “The excitement is building, especially now we’ve been given a schedule of what our World Cup month is going to look like.

“I’ve tried not to focus on it too much, as I’ve still got the Bulls’ season to prioritise, but I’m excited now.

“It would have been nice to go abroad for the World Cup, but we’ve got a good base and camp lined up in Preston.

“Those Wales camps always have a great atmosphere too, and they’re full of characters.”
