MARK Hughes praised City’s patience after their convincing 4-1 win at a scorching York today.

Goals from Kian Scales, Andy Cook, Lee Angol and Kian Harratt earned the Bantams victory over the National League new boys on their first visit to the LNER Community Stadium.

“We’re pleased with the run-out," said Hughes. "They were very warm conditions and will be for the next few days as everybody knows around the country.

“I thought we did it in the right manner. We obviously didn’t try to conserve energy, we gave what we had and I thought we were quite patient in our build-up.

“But when we had to quicken it up at the top of the pitch, I thought we showed good intent and we looked dangerous. That’s encouraging for the games and the season that we have ahead of us.

“We talk about having control in games. Sometimes if you take that extra pass then the obvious pass presents itself and it’s an easier ball to play rather than trying to force the issue.

“We recognised when we could play forward and when we could create.

“We’re going to have to be really good at that this year. Teams in the league aren’t going allow us to play, so we’re going to need that patience to pick the right opportunities to attack and be dynamic in our play.

“Because of the control we had in the game, you’re not wasting energy with transitions and loss of possession, having to recover positions.

“It’s about not having transition after transition and having to react to those things.”

Vadaine Oliver stayed back at Woodhouse Grove for a running session as he builds up his fitness. Hughes expects him to be involved against Sunderland on Tuesday.

The City boss is also confident that Liam Ridehalgh and Luke Hendrie will be ready for the start of the season – and could feature at Chesterfield next weekend.

“They are doing okay but they aren’t quite there yet.

“Rides trained Thursday, Friday which is encouraging. Neither of them will be involved on Tuesday but Chesterfield might be an option.

“There’s a couple of knocks, but you get that in pre-season. There’s no point (in risking players) because we’ve got enough bodies.

“We’re going to have more options again on Tuesday, so I’m not too worried about it.”
