FORMER Bradford Bulls star and West Bowling native John Bateman suffered double pain on Magic Weekend in Newcastle.

Not only did his 12-man Wigan side lose in heart-breaking fashion to St Helens, going down 20-18 after conceding a last-gasp try, but he picked up a nasty injury.

Scans afterwards have revealed that Bateman played the majority of the game with a broken rib, even scoring a try after damaging it.

He is expected to be out of action for a month in a blow to Wigan's ambitions of winning Super League.

Meanwhile, former Bulls prop Ross Peltier has joined Hunslet on loan from Championship side Dewsbury.

The Jamaican international, who also used to be a Keighley Cougars player, hit the headlines last year for the wrong reasons.

Making a surprise move into politics, the Green Party selected Peltier as its candidate for the upcoming Batley and Spen by-election, but that offer was revoked after highly-offensive past Tweets from the prop emerged.
