MARK Hughes is not drawing a line under City’s frenetic summer business just yet.

The squad has undergone a major revamp during the window with 14 new signings as Hughes puts his stamp on the club.

Most of that recruitment took place early enough to get them in for a full pre-season.

Hughes admits all the pieces of his City jigsaw are nearly in place – but there is still potentially room for more.

Hughes said: “We’re in a really good place in terms of what we’ve done up to this point. We’re delighted how it’s gone.

“But we’ll never say never because there are always opportunities that get flagged up and raise their heads.

“You think, ‘goodness me, that makes sense, we have to go after that one.’ But the bulk of the squad clearly is in place now.”

Fiacre Kelleher’s loan move to Solihull Moors was the first of several exits now expected that will provide more leeway in the playing budget for the City boss.

“I think there’s probably a realisation that some players need to go out, not to balance the books as such, but you always like a little bit of headroom.”

Vadaine Oliver is not expected to feature against York tomorrow as City get him up to speed after missing the first couple of weeks of pre-season.

Centre half Timi Odusina will also miss out again after falling ill but Levi Sutton is pushing for his first pre-season involvement.

Hughes said: “It’s been a little bit stop-start for Timi so far. He’s had a bit of illness so that’s set him back.

“But we’re hopeful next week and the weeks to follow will really kick him on.

“Levi joined in full training so he’s available. Rom (Crichlow) is also nearly back in the group, he had a slight strain when he was away.

“He’s very close to returning to the group so we’re in good shape.”

York, promoted to the National League after a five-year absence, will offer a different test to Derby in City’s first visit to the LNER Community Stadium.

Hughes added: “That’s what we want. It will be a good option for us and that’s why we took the game.

“It’s another good opportunity and with the (Sunderland) game on Tuesday to follow that will help in terms of moving our fitness levels ahead very quickly.

“It’s still about getting the minutes in. We haven’t got that many games to get the opportunity to get 90 minutes into players.

“We’ll obviously try and get as much game-time into as many as we can to make sure they’re not under-cooked.”
