ELLIOT Watt has signed for Salford for an undisclosed fee after rejecting the chance to stay at Valley Parade.

City were keen to hang on to the midfielder, who played 96 games in two years at the club. He scored five goals in that time, the last against Leyton Orient in February.

Watt turned down a new offer but will stay in League Two with Salford. City are thought to have received a five-figure sum in compensation because of his age.

He told Salford's club website: “The big thing for me was I wanted a fresh start and also to play under a coach who I felt can improve me.

“The gaffer was a big part with the players he’s developed at Man United. I spoke to him and he was massive for why I chose to come here.”

In a message to City fans on Twitter, Watt said: "Loved every minute of playing for the club even through the tough times. Developed a lot as a player and as a person.

"Wish the club all the best this coming season and beyond! Thanks for everything."

He follows Charles Vernam and Paudie O'Connor through the Valley Parade exit after they both recently signed for Lincoln.

City are due to visit Salford on October 15 with the return date at home on New Year's Day.
