CITY are ramping up their chase for another striker after losing Lee Angol again.

Derek Adams fears that Angol’s season will be over from the hamstring injury he suffered at Rochdale.

And that has increased the urgency in their on-going hunt for another forward as the transfer window enters its final full week.

Adams has been looking for a frontman anyway – and recently admitted defeat in the race for League of Ireland top scorer Georgie Kelly, who is now interesting Steven Schumacher’s Plymouth as well as Rotherham.

The clock is ticking to fill the hole left by Angol’s lengthy absence.

“We’ll have to try and get a striker in, we were always thinking of that anyway,” said Adams.

“We’ve got (Theo) Robinson, (Caolan) Lavery and Andy Cook but it was always an area that we have been trying for in the window.

“We have missed out on some but we’ll continue to try and do something.

“We have negotiations with clubs ongoing and we’ll see where we are come next week.”

City are set to announce another arrival in time for tomorrow’s trip to Walsall. Reports yesterday linked them with Portsmouth goalkeeper Alex Bass.

Adams had wanted to get the deal for a new player sorted in time for Saturday’s goalless draw.

“We hit a slight snag on Friday so we’re hopeful that will be sorted out really quickly. We hope to have him in for Tuesday.”

Angol pulled up as he ran into the Rochdale penalty and was about to shoot. The injury was in his left hamstring – and not the one that he has had a history of problems with.

Having signed on a one-year deal in the summer, he could potentially have kicked his last ball for the club.

“We genuinely feel sorry for him because he was starting to get a run, playing better and better and getting fitter,” said teammate Yann Songo’o.

“He’s a player with so much talent and he was showing that in the last couple of weeks. He has shown a lot of quality for us in games this season.

“The chance he had then, nine times out of 10 that would have ended up in a goal.

“We don’t know how serious the injury is but fingers crossed that it’s not too bad and we can soon have him back with us.”

Huddersfield loanee Matty Daly made his City debut but was replaced by Cook after 50 minutes. Dion Pereira was missing again with a knock.

With another recruit imminent and a hectic end to the window, Songo’o will welcome any increased competition within the squad.

“We’ve got one objective to go for promotion. The gaffer knows what he wants and that’s whatever is going to push us to be better players.

“We had two new players in the team and have already shown we need to fight for a place. We had four or five players not involved and Dion is soon going to be back for us.

“We’re lucky enough to have a big squad and I take that as a blessing.

“The gaffer likes to mix it around. Last week I was on the bench, this week playing and who knows in the next game.

"But he knows this division really well and what team will fit for each game. No matter who is in the starting 11, we know we have to give everything to keep the shirt."
