CITY’S Boxing Day game against Harrogate is off – as the EFL announced that the show will try to go on.

Sunday’s Yorkshire derby at Valley Parade has been postponed due to a continuation of positive Covid cases in the Bantams camp.

Members of the first-team squad remain out of action because of the 10-day self-isolation period following last Friday’s round of testing.

Several other Boxing Day fixtures have also been postponed already but the EFL have stressed that their programme of matches will continue where possible.

In a statement issued this afternoon, chief executive Trevor Birch said: “Throughout the pandemic, our two priorities have been ensuring the welfare of those involved in EFL competitions and ensuring the fixture schedule can continue where it is safe to do so.

“We will continue to work with clubs, authorities and other agencies to monitor the Covid-19 case rate and be prepared to respond accordingly, yet for now the view remains that we can continue to deliver games safely where clubs have sufficient healthy personnel in place, on and off the pitch.

“With club mitigation measures, the mass adoption of booster jabs and Covid certification now required for larger crowds, we are sure many fans will continue to feel confident in attending matches over the Christmas period and we look forward to welcoming them.”

City’s game at Carlisle was among the large number of weekend casualties. Only four fixtures in League Two survived.

The EFL reintroduced daily testing among clubs on Friday morning – when City reported that because of the number of positives recorded they would not have been able to meet the 14-player minimum requirement to field a team at Brunton Park.

City will now miss out on their first Boxing Day home game since 2017 when they lost to Peterborough in League One.

Derek Adams’ side are scheduled to return to action at Walsall next Wednesday and Barrow on New Year’s Day.

Tickets for Sunday will remain valid for the rearranged date – but the club cannot offer any refunds until that has been confirmed.
