BULLS head coach John Kear has confirmed he knows who his vice-captain will be for next season, saying he will tell his players “imminently”.

Sam Hallas was a valuable understudy to long-time skipper Steve Crossley, but he left to join Bradford’s Championship rivals Newcastle in the off-season.

But Kear has moved quickly to replace Hallas’ leadership presence, saying: “I have got a player in mind for the vice-captaincy and I’ll be announcing him to the players imminently.

“He’ll do a great job in the role, as he’s someone with great spirit, who’s enthusiastic about the game.”

The veteran head coach will still miss Hallas though, just like Brandon Pickersgill and Ross Oakes, who recently departed to join Featherstone and Sheffield respectively.

The trio had been first team regulars under Kear throughout his four seasons so far at Bradford, so it will be strange not seeing them in the red, amber and black in 2022.

Kear said: “It is sad, as I got on well with Pick, Sam and Ross, and the three of them were really important in our progression over the last few seasons.

“But I totally understand the reasons behind their departures, and that’s just the way it goes in rugby league.

“Someone comes in for a player they’d like and gives them a great offer, which is all part of professional sport.

“I know their qualities and wish them all the best, except when they play against Bulls of course.”
