DEREK Adams admits that City’s on-going failure to score goals is “killing him”.

The Bantams boss launched a scathing attack on his side after their FA Cup exit at Exeter last night.

Lee Angol scored an early opener in the replayed first-round replay but yet more missed chances came back to haunt them as the Grecians rallied to win 2-1.

Adams did not hold back in his criticism at seeing another opponent let off the hook.

He said: “I know that I sound like a broken record to the supporters because I say it all the time.

“But we have created so many good openings, we cut teams open but we don’t score enough goals.

“It kills me as a manager sitting on the touchline and working hard each week seeing my players create good openings and not take them.

“That’s not fun. I’m the responsible person because I’m the manager but I can’t get the blame all the time.”

The Scot is desperate to get his teeth into a busy January transfer window but must get City back on track in the next month. The last win was on October 23 at Swindon.

“We’ve got to get to January,” he added. “But at this moment in time, I can’t keep on watching a team create the big chances like we are and not score the goals and kill off teams.

“As a football manager, it’s really difficult for me. You’re only as good as the players that you’ve got.

“I’m so frustrated because I see some really good play in the first half. We open up Exeter, we create chances and it’s getting more difficult as the days go on because we’re not killing off teams.

“You look at players who have scored goals throughout their career and we haven’t got enough of them in the squad.

“I can see it, everyone can. I’m not stupid – I know we haven’t got enough players who are capable of putting the ball in the back of the net and that’s our biggest problem.

“In my career in management, my teams and my players score goals – from midfield, from wide areas. We haven’t got enough.

“Last season, their xG was bottom half of the table. This season it’s at the top.

“That tells you the difference. We are creating really big openings but we haven’t got the players to take them.

“The structure is correct and nobody can argue that we’re not creating chances – the facts are there to be seen. Unfortunately we haven’t got the players that are taking the chances, end of story."

Angol and Theo Robinson, who came off the bench late on, are currently City’s only fit strikers. Top scorer Andy Cook, Charles Vernam, Caolan Lavery and Abo Eisa are all injured.

“We’ve got a huge problem at the moment because we’ve got four attacking players out.

“You see the options we had were limited in that forward area.”

Adams must also be careful with monitoring Angol’s minutes after his hamstring problems – which he is clearly not happy about.

“As a manager, I’m being told that you can’t play this one for this length of time.

“I’m the manager of a football club that needs results and people will be here long after I’ve left the building. But that’s what happens.”
