DEREK Adams has been given the green light to get ready to go January shopping.

The City boss has confirmed the board have given him a budget to chase the targets that he wants in the mid-season window.

Money from the recent sale of winger Ollie Crankshaw to Stockport and the wages they have saved has helped swell the resources that will be made available to Adams to improve his squad in the areas he is targeting.

He said: “We’ll have support to do that. We have a budget that will allow us to (have a) go in January.

“We have obviously sold a player already and have money from that and we’ll be able to add players.

“We’ve got avenues to go down and add in the January transfer window when it comes along.”

Adams has already stated that he likes to freshen up his teams halfway through a season – and has given a veiled warning to the current squad.

The Scot spoke after the Tranmere defeat about the need for more winners in the dressing room and having a stronger mentality to succeed.

“Sometimes you can’t alter it so you have to change,” he added. “That’s the nature of any business.

“If you can’t change a person, they need to be changed. We all know that is the case.

“As a manager and a leader you try your best to help individuals change.

“But sometimes in life that’s not always easy. People are sometimes stuck in their ways and don’t look outside their own thoughts.

“You see that in society on a daily basis. Football is no different from working in different sectors.”

City have slipped to six points behind the top seven as they face bottom club Scunthorpe at Glanford Park tomorrow.

Adams has injury concerns after Lee Angol, Caolan Lavery and Charles Vernam were all forced off in midweek but Oscar Threlkeld hopes to return.

City have gone four games without a win but the Scot is wary of overreacting to the Tranmere loss.

“I’ve got to be careful. We didn’t do well in the second half but statistically we’ve had the most shots in the division and the fourth most touches in the penalty box.

“We’re doing something right. We just need to add a clinical edge to our game that will enable us to finish off teams.

“Only one team out of the top seven at this stage last season finished in the league above.

“It’s a long old season and we’ve got a lot of points to be played for. If we can get some strength added in January to the players we’ve already got then we’ll be in a much better place.”
