BRADFORD City Women celebrated Women’s Football Weekend in style with a pair of superb victories.

The first team were away to Cheadle Town Stingers in the FA Cup first round, playing fantastically well to win 2-1 despite their captain Katy Woodcock being out of action with a head injury.

The Bantams had the bulk of the first half chances, but it was Cheadle who were the first to find the net.

However, as they slammed the ball past City goalkeeper Hannah Richards, the linesman’s flag went up and the goal was disallowed.

Twenty-eight minutes in, and Cheadle's Aly Hastie took a shot which rattled off the crossbar.

Despite all the action, the two teams went into half-time level at 0-0.

The Bantams finally got their long-awaited goal on the hour mark, when midfielder Maisie Norde netted with a cracking curling shot from 30 yards out.

Not long afterwards, Monika Stube was brought on for Ellie Prothero and instantly made her mark on the game.

After just five minutes on the pitch, the substitute found the net, darting past the Cheadle defence and sending the ball into the back of the net.

Cheadle retaliated 15 minutes later, as Hastie fired the ball past keeper Richards and into the net.

However, the goal came too late for the hosts, as the game ended 2-1, meaning City will advance to the second round proper.

They will face Chorley away on November 28 in that next round.

Bantams head coach Chris Hames was pleased with his team’s performance, saying: “It was a good solid performance from us, one which we probably should have made more comfortable with the chances we created.

“Every week I talk about our quest to progress and develop. We are improving all the time and in time it’ll all click and come together.”

Hames also felt quietly confident ahead of the next round of the FA Cup, saying: “Chorley is a tough draw, but we fully believe in ourselves.”

Meanwhile, back in Bradford, the Under-23s also came out on top in the FA Women's National League Reserve Plate against Barnsley Reserves.

The team got off to a slow start, conceding two goals in the first 15 minutes.

However, skipper Valeria Martin was determined to lead her team to victory, as she and Katie Breckin pulled City level before the break.

After the break, Victoria Robinson also netted for City, but Barnsley scored a late equaliser to take the game to penalties.

Luck was on the Bantams' side though, as they won 4-2 in the shootout, with their goalkeeper Ella Jacobs staying strong.

The win means the Under-23s go through to the semi-finals of the FAWNL Reserve Plate, where they will host Stockport County Reserves in the semi-finals.
