DEREK Adams wants Charles Vernam to weigh in with more City goals.

The winger netted the equaliser in Saturday’s 1-1 home draw with Barrow – a frustrating result that saw some fans boo at the final whistle.

Vernam was the home side’s star man and salvaged a point when he headed home a Gareth Evans cross.

But while Adams can appreciate his attacking threat, he believes Vernam should be aiming to up his game in and around the opposition box.

The City chief said: “Charles has scored two goals this season and created three assists so he’s done well.

“He’s got to hit the target more. We’ve seen that again.

“He’s been in good positions and if he hits the target more, he’s going to score more.

“We’ve got a threat there and Charles has shown that. His stats prove that and there are other players in the team who need to get up to his level.”

The Bantams were again left to regret missed chances after a fourth league game without a win saw them slip to ninth.

Defender Liam Ridehalgh admitted City must get used to visiting teams raising their game playing in front of the big crowds at Valley Parade.

Ridehalgh said: “It’s a great place to play football and that will lift them. But we’ve got to overcome that and find ways to break the opposition down.

“We are doing that in terms of creating chances – we’re just not putting the ball in the back of the net.

“But I think that will come in the next few weeks and we’ll be fine.”

The City left back could understand the angry reaction from a section of the home crowd.

“They just want us to win games – that’s why they come every week and pay their hard-earned money,” he added.

“But I can assure you we are doing our hardest to win.

“I’ve been in the game long enough to know that you can’t get disappointed. If we weren’t creating chances, that’s when you are scratching your head.”

City have also failed to keep a clean sheet since the goalless draw at Exeter on the opening day.

Ridehalgh said: “As a defender, you pride yourselves on clean sheets.

“It’s not like we're being carved open. It’s either something like a freak goal or a great strike like Saturday but I’m sure we’ll be working on as a team as well as scoring.”
