BARROW come to Valley Parade with a race row hanging over them.

Mark Cooper’s side suffered their first home defeat of the season last week against Colchester.

But the 3-2 loss was overshadowed by allegations of racial abuse against opposition keeper Shamal George.

Cumbrian Police continue to investigate the incident, which occurred in the first half, along with the club – who made a public announcement condemning the abuse that was coming from behind the goal at the time.

George tweeted afterwards: "I hope the racists enjoyed that one."

Former Premier League keeper Shaka Hislop, president of the UK’s largest anti-racism educational charity Show Racism the Red Card, also sent his support.

“It’s heartbreaking that we’re still having this discussion in 2021," he said in a video message.

The incident has tarnished the start of the season for the Bluebirds in their second year back in the league.

They have pushed the boat out to recruit striker Offrande Zanzala, a City target in January. Former Forest Green boss Cooper’s signings also include Leeds winger Jordan Stevens on loan – he made little impression during a similar stint at Valley Parade last term.

Cooper said of their Valley Parade visit: "You know what you're going to get.

"They're physical, they've got some really good players and it's a hostile atmosphere - but a great place to play.

"We're going to need our supporters and we've also got to pick them up to give them something to cheer.

"The supporters so far, while I've been here, have been magnificent."

Barrow will be without defender James Jones, who is suspended after picking up two late bookings in last Friday’s game.
