BRADFORD Council has confirmed it will not be showing England's huge semi-final match on Wednesday on the Big Screen in City Park.

England face Denmark at 8pm tomorrow in Euro 2020 at Wembley for a place in Sunday's final.

It's the third time England have reached the semi-final of a major tournament in four years, with the Three Lions hoping to go one better this time round.

Before this year's tournament began Bradford Council said it had opted to not show England's matches on the Big Screen in the purpose-built city centre events space, instead encouraging people to stay at home or go to the pub to watch the games.

With England reaching the semi-finals, some had hoped the Council would change its mind and screen the game in City Park, allowing people to watch the match safely socially distanced outdoors, with the possibility of scenes like has been seen in other fan parks around the country if England are succesful.

However, Bradford Council has said the Big Screen will remain football-less this summer.

None of the 2018 World Cup matches were screen in City Park either, decisions which disappointed some fans in the district who had been hoping for scenes reminiscent of tournaments in the 2000s.

A spokesperson said: “We have taken the decision not to screen any of the football matches from the Euros on the big screen in the city centre this year as we want to encourage people to stay local, stay safe and support their local hospitality venue.

"Pubs and hospitality venues across the district are doing all they can to recover from what has been a particularly tough year for their trade and we want to encourage people to support their local area by watching the matches from there.

"The matches are also being shown on terrestrial TV so people can watch from the comfort and safety of their own home.

"Whichever way people choose to watch and cheer on England we’d like to remind people that Covid-19 still hasn’t gone away and they should continue to follow the rules around washing their hands, wearing face coverings, social distancing, fresh air and not gathering in large groups.”

England play Denmark at Wembley at 8pm on Wednesday for a place in the Euro 2020 final, with the match being shown on ITV and in pubs across the Bradford district.

The other semi-final, between Italy and Spain and also from Wembley, takes place at 8pm today and will be shown live on BBC One.
