Dave Halley will miss the start of the 2011 Super League season after undergoing knee reconstruction surgery.

The Bulls flyer faces at least six months on the sidelines as he recovers from torn cruciate ligaments, meaning he is unlikely to return until midway through the campaign.

The setback occurred during last month’s Carnegie 9s at Headingley, in which the Bulls finished as runners-up following a 20-16 defeat against Wigan in the final.

Halley’s injury was not initially thought to be serious, until scans revealed the full extent of the problem.

It is the second serious knee injury Bradford have suffered in the past four months, with youngster James Donaldson also sidelined following a similar operation.

“Everybody is devastated for Dave,” said Bulls football and media manager Stuart Duffy.

“It was an injury that looked pretty innocuous at first but it then became clear he would need a knee reconstruction.

“The club will ensure he gets the best treatment available and we all hope to see him back in action as soon as possible.”

Halley’s injury is a blow for the Bulls, with the 23-year-old able to cover at both full back and on the wing.

But the impact will be softened by the arrival of several recent additions to the back division – including former Great Britain wing Gareth Raynor, whose signing was confirmed yesterday.

New Zealand Warriors three-quarter Patrick Ah Van and Wigan winger Shaun Ainscough are also on their way to Odsal next season, while wing pair Rikki Sheriffe and Stuart Reardon have departed.

Another signing to bolster options behind the pack will also be confirmed tomorrow as new coach Mick Potter’s recruitment drive continues apace.
