Steve Menzies is happy to be labelled a freak.

At the age of 36, the Aussie back-rower is still doing things that would be more believable coming from someone half his age.

Although he may get a well-deserved break when the Bulls travel to Dewsbury for Sunday’s Challenge Cup fourth-round tie, Menzies has so far showed no hint of time catching up with him, even while recently playing three games in ten days.

“You end up using the word ‘freak’ quite a bit,” said head coach Steve McNamara.

“We should probably stop mentioning his age. He’s just a champion and he’s great to have around.”

Menzies made a superb contribution to the Bulls’ win at Catalans Dragons last week – the final game of the busy Easter period – highlighted by a dazzling interception try.

As ever, the former Kangaroos star was quick to spread the praise.

Menzies, enjoying his football as much as ever, believes the team are beginning to hit a rich vein of form as they aim to kick-start a cup run.

He said: “I’m just really enjoying winning and the way I’m playing. I haven’t got long to go in the game – whether it’s six months or 18 months, however long it is.

“I just really enjoy what I do for a living and the more we win, the happier I am.”

Menzies added: “The last couple of weeks, we’ve played good in patches and then you give the opposition a bit of football and it’s hard to really attack as well as you can.

“We’ve set ourselves up now. We just need to keep consolidating, hopefully get somewhere close to the top four, then roll the dice and give yourself a good chance at the end of the year.”
