JAKE Webster has warned the Bulls they must stick to the game-plan after back-to-back Championship losses.

The former NRL centre felt Sunday’s clash with York at Odsal was “there for the taking” after a run of 14 unanswered points had given the home side a second-half lead.

But after going down again 24-14, Webster felt they suffered from players trying to do too much on their own.

Webster did not name names but reminded those around him of the importance of the team ethic.

He said: “People lost their heads and tried to do things on their own instead of just trying to build a set.

“We had a game-plan but people just got a bit excited instead of sticking to what we’d been practising.

“We had a fair few attacking sets where we didn’t even get to a kick. We didn’t set up our play because people were doing things out of our systems.

“But it’s a learning curve and we’ll be better for it. We’ll have a good look at it in the next couple of days and work on the things we need to.”

The season is only four games in but Webster dismissed the suggestion that the mistakes are down to teething troubles from a new team still bedding in.

“I just think we’re trying to make excuses,” he added.

“We’ve played enough games together. We had six friendlies and everyone pretty much played with each other.

“Our glitches are simple errors, not fronting up in the middle, missing one-on-one tackles or people going off on their own little tangent when I think they know what’s right.

“We’ve got to cut that out and build a set, build a game instead of trying to create a fantastic play.

“We saw that at the start of the second half. We get a rocket and then look what happens – we build a set and then boom.

“We’re all on the same page. We’re heading in the right direction.

“But at the moment, we’re on the right page for 15 minutes and then we go off. If we can sort that out, it’s going to be an interesting year.”

Following on from the 24-10 loss at Sheffield the week before, it is the first time the Bulls have suffered successive defeats under John Kear.

Webster could see an improvement in performance against York compared with the previous round. But he stressed there are areas to work on before another home game with highly-fancied Toulouse.

He said: “The middles really answered their critics because they were poor against Sheffield.

“We got some things right but too many wrong. The game was there for the taking but we let York back in with two soft tries.

“It’s hard to win games when you’re not switched on for the full 80.

“We can’t keep saying it week in, week out. It’s got to start happening and that starts at training.

“We’ve started training a bit harder and people are putting their hand up there. Now it’s got to be put into the games.”
