BRADFORD City Women collected their first three points of the season following a dramatic 2-1 victory over Chester Le Street at the Mitton Group Stadium.

Goals from Charlotte Stuart and Sophie Hawkins allowed City to make a remarkable second half comeback and rise from the bottom of the National League North table.

Despite making her 100th appearance for the club, it was an afternoon to forget on a personal note for full back Zoe Roberts who missed a penalty and was sent to the sin bin late on.

Eager to make an impression after three losses on the bounce, the Bantams got off to a fighting start with Caitlyn Douglas hitting the crossbar only two minutes in.

Just after the half hour mark, Chester received a vital free kick. Bradford’s defenders did well to head the ball out at first, but the ball bounced in front of an opposition attacker. She found a gap and sent the ball into the back of the net.

Moments later, Bradford received their first penalty of the season. Roberts smashed the ball down the middle, but the keeper made a save.

The hosts gained their equaliser soon after the kick off for the second period. Maisie Norde's corner found Stuart whose header caused the net to bulge.

On the 70th minute, it was the visitors' turn to rattle the bar.

Nine minutes later, Harriet Jakeman crossed the ball to a ready and waiting Hawkins. The spectators held their breath as she smashed the ball home.

The drama was not over there though as the away team gained a spot kick. In all the commotion, Roberts was sin binned for talking back to the referee. The ball soared over the net as the home fans cheered in delight.

However, this was not the end of Bradford’s problems. Le Street put the pressure on against their reduced opposition. Skye Kirkham was forced to make a great save not long after Chester’s penalty.

Roberts said: “I honestly cannot believe I’ve been here this long. The girls worked their socks off today, we went back to basics, and it seemed to have worked.”

Manager Chris Hames added: “I thought the girls played outstanding today despite conceding to a set piece. We deserved that win, we know how good Chester Le Street are, but we got what we deserved in the end.”
