The player of the year awards night is coming up soon and my choice would be Luke O’Brien.

He has grasped his chance with both hands over the course of the season and established himself as the first-choice left back.

As with any youngster, there have been a few lapses while he learns his trade and he’s been a bit susceptible to getting caught on his blind side by the winger coming in. But overall he has been very consistent.

He defends well and has also got the energy and desire to overlap going forward and get crosses in the box, which I love seeing full backs do.

I always remember as a young kid at Coventry, playing at home against the great Ipswich side which won the UEFA Cup.

I was on the left wing, up against George Burley, and my manager Dave Sexton told me to get at him because he wasn’t the best defender. But all I did for the whole afternoon was chase him back. When I did get the ball, I was too shattered to get forward!

That’s what I love with Luke. He’s got a good attitude and drive and likes to get support to the front players.

Obviously Thorney and Boulding have got the goals this season and the lads who’ve come in on loan have done okay.

But the wingers have all been out with injuries at some point so, for me, the player of the year has got to come from the keeper or backline and I just think Luke has been the pick.
