City are not panicking to get Nahki Wells locked in long term at Valley Parade despite the rumours linking him with a move away.

The exciting striker is back in Bermuda on holiday as he considers the four-year contract offer made by the club.

While the deal remains unsigned, the stories about his future will fly around.

City this week shot down an internet report that Sheffield United had lodged a £100,000 bid. Sources in his native island have also claimed that Wells is being monitored by clubs in the top two divisions.

But with the 22-year-old already secured for next term, the club are not pushing him for a speedy decision.

“Let’s not get too hung up about the Nahki situation,” said director of operations David Baldwin.

“He has a four-year offer on the table and has gone back home to see his family. He’s been away from them for a long period of time.

“Nahki is a young man and quite naturally wants to talk the offer through with his family and friends.

“He’ll have a break and we’ll follow it through when he comes back to the UK.

“That might take a while but there’s no immediate push for me to resolve it in the next two or three weeks.”

Wells notched 12 goals in his debut campaign with City, including a hat-trick at Northampton. One of the lowest-paid players in the squad, he will get a pay rise next season after the club took up an option in their favour to extend his original one-year contract.

Baldwin added: “We activated the clause by way of an initial reward to him. That was basically telling Nahki that we like him and, in the first instance, triggering the clause shows that we want him here.

“That puts him on improved money next year automatically.”

Wells has already publicly reassured concerned fans by stating that he will still be a City player next season. And the club are confident that he can carry on where he left off.

Baldwin said: “Nahki will be here at Bradford City next season and hopefully sticking the goals in for fun. Within that process we’ll look to secure his services for longer.

“Any fear of him not being back next year has been allayed by Nahki himself. He’s enjoying what he’s doing.

“And he’s still got his clothes in the wardrobe at the clubhouse so he’s intending to return!”
