AIREBOROUGH Lions kick-off their recruitment drive for the new rugby union season at Guiseley Carnival on Sunday by taking part in the traditional parade through the town centre before hosting their own stall at Guiseley Infants School.

The junior section of Aireborough RUFC now boasts nine teams from the age of four in the micro section through to the under 14s – a new age group for next season.

The under-sevens and eights concentrate on tag rugby, with tackling being introduced from under-nine level.

Coaching co-ordinator Kris Brook said the Yeadon-based club was very keen to build on the surge in player membership in recent seasons.

He said: “I was privileged to be head coach of the micros last season, and some weeks we had more than 40 boys and girls turning up to take part in training.

“Indeed, such was the level of interest that we chose to split the group into two sections to ensure each player had a very high level of personal attention from our eight coaches and a proper opportunity to develop their basic skills.

“But, most importantly, playing rugby for Aireborough Lions is all about having fun, making friends and keeping fit.

“I would encourage parents to bring their kids along to Nunroyd Park at 10.30 on Sunday mornings when the new season starts in September and give us a try. All boys and girls aged four and upwards, and their mums and dads, will be made to feel very welcome.”
