Badminton player Michael Ruddock has been named Oakbank Sports College’s Sports Personality of the Year.

The district and county star has had an outstanding season, and picked up the prize, voted for by peers, at the school’s presentation night.

The guest of honour was Kate Walsh, captain of the Great Britain women’s hockey team and double Olympian, who has also won silver and bronze Commonwealth medals.

Junior Sports Personality went to Abigail Proctor for her achievements in district and county netball, and she also represents the school at badminton and rounders.

Team of the Year went to under-14 girls’ rugby league, who won the Bradford schools and regional tournaments to qualify for the national finals.

Past sports award winners at Oakbank include cyclist Tom Moses and table tennis star Mary Fuller, who have both represented their country.

Last year’s sports personality of the year was footballer Matthew Pearson, who scored in the reserves for Blackburn Rovers against Liverpool last season.

The 17-year-old is part of the youth squad at Ewood Park.
