GEORGE Hahn won a staggering seven events when the West Yorkshire Sportshall Athletics Trials were held at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre.

The St Joseph's Catholic Primary School pupil from Bingley not only won the one-lap (12.90sec) and two-lap races (26.30sec), the one-lap obstacle time trial (22.10sec), the standing long jump (2.28m), standing triple jump (6.12m), vertical jump (5m) and chest push (7.50m) for under-11 boys, he also broke two records and equalled another.

George broke the time for the two-lap race and the distance for the standing long jump, and equalled the time for the one-lap race.

He wasn't the only record-breaker in that age group, however, as Dan Logan (Baildon Church of England) set a new mark for the high stepper (12.70sec), and Malachi Morris (St Michael's, Halifax, 18.70sec) and Leo Austin (Burnley Road Academy, Mytholmroyd, 21.10sec) broke the records for the under-over relay and Grand Prix Time Trial respectively.

George was far from being the only multiple winner though.

Rabana Saith (Tong High School) triumphed in four events among the under-13 girls – the two-lap A final (26.20sec), standing long jump (2.18m), standing triple jump (6.20m) and vertical jump (5.3m) – as did Ella Gill (Bradford Grammar School) in the obstacle time trial (22.80sec) and the one-lap (13.30sec), two-lap (26.00sec) and four-lap time trials (57.60sec).

Amelia Brown (St Mary's, Halifax) and Amelie Garnett (Baildon Church of England) were triple winners in the under-11 girls, as was Zak Wimpenny (King James School) in the under-13 boys.

Brown won the obstacle time trial (23.30sec), chest push (7.25m) and soft javelin (14.75m), while Garnett triumphed in the standing triple jump (5.78m), balance test (30) and vertical jump (4.9m). Zak won the two-lap A final (24.80sec), four-lap race (56.60sec) and shot put (7.55m),

Double winners were under-15 girls Lucy Tattersfield (Immanuel, speed bounce 75, vertical jump 5.7m) and Georgia-May Codd (Crossley Heath School, standing long jump 2.26m, shot put 9.68m), under-15 boys Ralf Mak (Dixons Academy, four-lap time trial 54.60sec, standing long jump 2.14m) and Benjamin Adeniji (Crossley Heath School, standing triple jump 7.10m, shot put 8.28m) and under-13 boy Naeem Usamot (Grange School) in the two-lap A final (25.10sec) and vertical jump (5.2m).

Other winners included – Under-11 boys, Sam Bentley (Burley Oaks), speed bounce (56); Under-11 girls, Hannah Benson (Glusburn County Primary), high stepper (19.92); Under-13 boys, Guiseley School's William Cooke, four-lap time trial (57.10sec) and Keenan Dyer-Dixon, two-lap B final (26.20sec); Ilkley Grammar School's Thomas Dover, obstacle time trial (22.60sec) and Tom Jackson, speed bounce, 84; and Dixons Academy's Robert Taylor-Smith, standing long jump (2.24m) and Quayyum Abdullahi, standing triple jump (6.38m).

Under-13 girls, Maisy Chattoe (Bingley Grammar School), four-lap A final (58.80sec); Emma Cowley (Immanuel), shot put (6.55m). Under-15 boys, Damian Flathers (Dixons Academy), two-lap time trial (24.10sec). Under-15 girls, Jess Raynor (Brighouse High School), two-lap time trial (25.90sec).

A total of 239 boys and girls competed in the three age groups from Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax and Wakefield, with the under-13 girls up on last year, with all of them trying to gain selection for the combined under-11 and under-13 and under-15 teams for the Yorkshire Regional Finals in Halifax on Sunday, February 14.

The trials, which involved sprinting, jumping, throwing and agility challenges, plus obstacle relays, were organised, as usual, by Bingley Harriers, helped by sports centre staff and volunteers from Bingley Harriers, Spenborough AC, Bradford Airedale, One In a Million, Halifax Harriers and Longwood Harriers.

The under-13 and under-15 age groups look capable of progressing to the UK finals, but there is more room for under-13s and under-15s to take part in athletics at club and school level, whether that be sportshall athletics, track and field, cross-country or fell racing.

If anyone is interested, they should contact Alan or Christine Oates from the West Yorkshire Sportshall Athletics Association on 01274-416286, and they will point individuals towards their nearest club.
